H.S. Thorne ARPS
This site is a tribute to the talent of H. S. Thorne ARPS. He was born in 1889 in Newcastle. He served in the 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers during the Great War and survived the Battle of the Somme with minor injuries.
The Students' Bookshop
After working in several bookshops in the city, including the Bible House and T & G Allan, he became the manager of Waugh's in Ridley Place. In 1944 he started his own business which was known as The Students' Bookshop. It remained a family business until 1998 when it was sold to Blackwells.
